Why Coorg is known as the Scotland of India:  Coorg, officially called Kodagu, is famous as the “The Scotland of India”.  When Britishers ruled over India then British planter community lived here. They affectionately started calling  Coorg as “The Scotland of India”. As both have almost the same landscape and beauty. Weather of Coorg is similar to Scotland i.e, it is also misty, mountainous and cool, both had a local brew.  So they started calling it as the Scotland of India.

Why Coorg is famous?: It is famous for its beautiful weather, Coffee plants, and jaw-dropping landscapes.  The weather of Coorg is misty and cool throughout the year.  It is considered as one of the best honeymoon destinations in India. This district has splendid waterfalls and viewpoints.

History of Coorg: This beautiful place started getting significance back in the 2nd and 6th century. During this span, Northern part of Coorg was ruled by the Kadambas from Goa and has witnessed the terrible war, in the 11th century, which was fought between Kadambas and Gangas. In next few centuries, the place was ruled by several dynasties like Hoysalas, the Cholas and also the Vijayanagara Empire. When India got freedom from Britishers this place Kodagu was declared as district and became a vital part of state Karnataka.

How many days will be sufficient to visit Coorg? Kodugu is a big district with lots of places to discover. Normally, 3 days will be sufficient to admire its beauty and to visit the most of the tourist places. If you want to explore the wildlife and coffee plantation of Coorg than you need around 6-7 days.

Namdroling Monastery (Kushalnagar)

This temple is also famous with the name of Golden temple. This magnificent temple is a holy place for Buddhist. When you will go inside this temple, you will see group prayer on the rhythm of drumbeats. Several people reading books inside this temple and sitting along and admiring the holy place.  You can pray here for a while and takes pictures.

Opening Timings: Every day in a week and the opening timing is 9:00 am  -6:00 pm.

Best time to visit: You can visit this monastery throughout the year but the Tibetan New year (Losar) which usually occurs in the month of February or March, is the best time to visit it.

Talakaveri Temple

This mesmerized place is at the top of the Brahmagiri hill. Being at a great height and surrounded by hills, this place provides you a scenic view, beautiful atmosphere, and a place to shoot a lot. It will gear up your mood and will fill lots of energy in you. It is said that river Kaveri originates from here. There is a kund inside the temple where people can take a holy bath, from the temple there are stairs which leads you to the top of Brahmagiri hills. The viewpoint will provide you a breathtaking view and will provide you peace.

Advise: If you are travelling by your car or bike please drive carefully. The road is very twisty with multiple hairpins. Drive safe and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Dubare Elephant Camp

The elephant is not only an animal, it is a symbol of Royalty and strength. This camp is a beautiful place to get in touch with natural giants. It is located 29km from Coorg(Madikeri).  Actually, this is the home of Jumbo :). There are more than 10 elephants. They are trained here by the trainers.  It is situated the banks of the river Cauvery in Kodagu district of Karnataka. You can find a couple of water adventurous sports. River rafting and more.

Opening timings: The Dubare camp  opens at 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Best time to get in touch with Jumbo: The best time to visit Dubare Elephant Camp is between the months of September and March.

Raja’s Seat

Raja’s seat as the name itself suggests is the place where the king of Yore used to watch the sunset with their consorts. This place is considered as one of the best scenarios places in south India. This place is considered as a romantic place.  You can see beautiful flowers here.

Opening Timings:  This place open in the morning from 6:00 Am to 8:00 PM.

Best time:  You can be here anytime in the year.

Abbey Falls

It is a beautiful fall, 10 Km away from Madikeri.  The water is coming from 70 feet height. This fall attracts hundreds of people especially nature lovers and photographers from the country.  This fall was initially called Jessy fall in the name of the daughter of first British chaplain of Coorg ‘Jessy’. The walkthrough aromatic green gardens of coffee, cardamom, and other plantations are yet another unique experience you will have.

Abbey Falls Timings & Entry Fee:  Abbey Falls are open on all 7 days of the week from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The entry fees for the falls is INR 15 per person.

Omkareshwara Temple

This place is located very close to the center of the city. Temple is very clean and peaceful. You will enjoy this divine place.  This temple was built in 1820 by Lingarajendra as a dedication to Lord Shiva. If you really want to enjoy this beautiful temple then try to reach early morning because the temple gets later.

 

Apart from these places, you can also take a tour of the coffee plantation, safari at Nagarhole wildlife sanctuary.
