You all know Hyderabad for Charminar and Biryani, but it is well known for some of the other things. The city of Nizam has various souvenirs to pick along with you on your next trip. It is now around 1.5 years I am living in the city and have explored lots of places and shopping items with every new relative that comes to me. So, I have some suggestions to offer you that you should not miss buying on your next trip.
Pearl – You cannot miss buying Hyderabadi Pearl
Whosoever lands in Hyderabad has pearl shopping on top in their list. Hyderabad is the known as the city of pearl, all credits go to love of Nizam for pearls. Centuries have passed and Hyderabad continues to grow and known as pearl city. Though there are no water bodies around it still it is the one-stop destination for pearl shopping in India. Chandanpet is the small village near Hyderabad, where almost all people are engaged in the art of drilling of pearls for generations. There are lots of shop in an old city near Charminar for pearl shopping and some good popular store that give pearl authentic certificate also.
Bidriware – The unique art of black jewellery
Bidriware is a very unique metal handicraft which is mainly found in Bidar, Karnataka. It is very less known to most of the people but is charm of Bidar. Bidri craft is believed to be originated in the 14th century during the reign of Bahamani Sultans. It is handmade crafts, basically made of zinc metal and carving is done with silver. There are some good shops near Salar Jung Museum and Charminar where you can find a variety of beautifully carved products. There are some workshops also where you can see how artisans make the final Bidri products.
Biryani – The Identity of Hyderabad
Your visit to Hyderabad is just incomplete without having Biryani. Though Biryani is sold all over India the authentic taste you can get in Hyderabad only. Even, the unique process is followed here only to make biryani. For Hyderabadi parties means Biryani, they are very fond of it and are always ready to have it. There is various famous shop to have Biryani such as Paradise, Pista House, Shah Gouse.
Though Hyderabadi Biryani is not always possible to get with you but you can take Paper sweet. It is very popular sweet available in most of the sweet shop, it is made of thin layers of rice – almost like a paper with a filling of jaggery or coconut. Being in Hyderabad from last 1.5 years I would suggest better you get it packed from G Pulla Reddy for the authentic taste. It is the famous sweet shop in Hyderabad with multiple stores all throughout the city. You will surely wonder how they make rice sheet so thin, so transparent and thin.
Being not living in Telugu state from starting I used to things what this Gongura is? It names sound little odd but trust me its pickle taste yummy. Gongura is a green leaf that has the sour taste and Telugu people are very found of its pickle. You can easily found it in grocery stores. Take it with you, savor it and enjoy the new taste with your relatives.
Lac Bangles – Appreciate the art of handmade bangles
Laad Bazaar, connecting lane from Charminar to Chowmalla, famous for the handcrafted lac bangles. After reaching to old city women cannot miss the charms of the shinning bangles with myriads pattern. Laad Bazaar is also known as chudi bazar, here you can get an uncountable number of options in bangles to match with your dress at affordable price. The bangles are handmade and are crafted well with alluring designs. If you are a woman you should not miss to pick some the unique designs for you.
Osmania Buiscits with Irani Tea – Gift from Nizam
Osmania Biscuits have their own story of invention, they were first baked on the demand of Mir Osman Ali Khan, last Nizam of Hyderabad. He wanted snacks that were a little sweet and a little salty and the result was Osmania biscuits. Today they have become an integral part of the Hyderabadi snacks. You must have in evening them with Irani Tea.
Traditional weaves with fabric
There are various type of regional wear that you can take from Hyderabad – Especially Pochampally saris, Kalamkari, Khada Dupatta. Pochampally saris are must add in your wardrobe if you love sarees, the choice varies between silk or cotton. Kalamkari is the hand printing the fabric using pen and is easily available in the old city. Khada Dupatta is a bridal wear and it comprises more than 12 years of fabric and is shopped mostly by brides.
